It would have been wrong for Hitler's mother to abort him. It would have been wrong for someone to murder him when he was a little boy. People are innocent until they become guilty. We don't even execute convicted criminals without due process of law. Even victims (or surviving loved ones) who kill those who perpetrated crimes against them don't generally get off scot-free unless it was clearly a case of self-defense. Unless you've got a crystal ball that infallibly shows who grows up to become evil and who doesn't, this argument is simply silly anyway. It could just as easily be an argument for our side anyway. What if Martin Luther King Jr.'s mother had chosen to have an abortion? Or Winston Churchill's? What if Ann Dunham had found out much sooner - in the first half of 1961, let's say - that that guy she married was lying when he'd said he divorced his first wife back in Kenya, and decided she simply couldn't bear to carry his offspring to term? Where would Planned Parenthood be if Margaret Sanger's mother hadn't felt quite ready for a baby just yet? History, for good and ill, is shaped by living people. It's no use speculating what might or mightn't have been.
ReplyDeleteSadly, it's one of their oldest and most overused arguments. It fails for all the reasons you mentioned. It all goes back to the choice that matters most-the one between good and evil, that we face daily. We all have the same 24 hours in a day and the same opportunity to choose. It's hard not to speculate on all the people we've lost to abortion sometimes. It has left its mark on every single one of our lives-it isn't just a private decision, and in a large way this particular argument proves it. One person can change the course of history, for good or ill.
ReplyDeleteTed Bundy's mom got pregnant with him when she was really young and spent most of her pregnancy in a home for unwed mothers. The tragedy isn't that she didn't abort him, it's that they had bonding issues (she left him there for three months while deciding whether to have him adopted or not) and that that, along with living with his abusive grandfather, screwed up little-kid-Ted's emotional development and he ended up being a sociopath who brutally killed dozens of women. He was an intelligent person and could have made the world a better place if he'd had a different childhood and developed a conscience. He and Hitler didn't suck their thumbs in the womb plotting how to be murderers, for God's sake.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there are those who came from loving families and still turned out to be serial killers. Life is a crapshoot, and we all face the same choices daily. Great insights, Marauder.
ReplyDeleteHas this ever actually been proven to be fact, or is this just one of those so-called "facts" lurking around the Internet?
