ReplyDeleteI'm anti-abortion, and I have never been pregnant and have no desire ever to be pregnant. My husband is in his 50s and already has four grown or near-grown children. My medical situation is such that there could be serious complications for myself and/or my baby were I to become pregnant. For this reason, I am looking into permanent sterilization. I'm on the pill right now and I haven't ovulated in months, and after I get myself "fixed" I'll keep on taking it for medical reasons. In what possible sense could I be considered to see myself as a walking uterus? It's true that if something goes wrong and we conceive despite these precautions, I'm going to be a mommy in spite of myself. But I know my body, I know what level of risk is acceptable to me, I'm prepared to accept the consequences if things don't go my way, and I'm acting in accordance with my knowledge and principles. Not to brag, but I see that as mature, responsible, and empowered.
